why are growth charts needed
Growth is an index of health and wellbeing in individuals and populations
Abnormalities of growth and weight gain associated with illness, syndromes, under- and over-nutrition
How do we tell whether measurement is normal
Compare to other children of:
– Same age
– Same gender
how is a growth chart constructed
Made from a series of cross-sectional samples of measurements from children at different ages.
Constructed by mathematically ‘joining the dots’ between the mean key points at each age.
What does measurement outside the normal growth tell us
reflects underlying pathology
But, Extreme individuals aren’t always unhealthy
and The normal range isn’t always healthy
