Normal microbiota of GI tract Flashcards
1
Q
Enterococcus
A
GI tract General -*Gr+ cocci, pairs or short chains -*Facultative anaerobes -*Catalase - -γ-hemolytic -Bile-esculin + -PYR+ -Opportunists -HAIs -UTIs, wound infect., endocarditis, **intraabdominal abscesses, bacteremia Virulence -*Intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance -Adhesins -*pili -*biofilms
2
Q
Bacteroides
A
GI tract General -Gr- pleomorphic rod -Normal microbiota mouth, colon, GU humans, animals -causes *Peritonitis, intraabdominal abscess -Aerotolerant anaerobe -bile-tolerant -*Dominant genus in colon -*Bacteroides fragilis Virulence -LPS -Capsule (*capsule alone stimulates abscess formation)
3
Q
Peritonitis, abscesses
A
GI tract
-Normal GI microbiota are etiologic agents of acute peritonitis and abscesses associated w/ bowel rupture
-Only 4-6 species generally recovered from intraabdominal infections
-E. coli and other enteric Gr- rods
-Enterococci
-Viridans streptococci
-Clostridia
-Bacteroides fragilis
Pathogenesis
-peritonitis,bacteremia–>intraabdominal abscesses
Symptoms
−Abdominal pain
−Abdominal distention
−*Fever
