Epididymitis and Epididymoorchitis Flashcards
Mumps virus
Epididymitis and Epididymoorchitis
- Paramyxoviridae
• *Negative-sense, non-segmented ssRNA
• RNA synthesis etc. in *cytoplasm
• *Helical nucleocapsid, appears *pleomorphic or spherical in electron micrographs
• *Enveloped
• Including *mumps, measles, RSV
Disease
• *Mumps = benign viral parotitis
Complications
• *Aseptic meningitis most frequent extrasalivary complication mumps virus infection in children.
• *Mumps epididymoorchitis
o Orchitis in 20-30% men w/ mumps
• Usually 4-7 days after development parotitis
• Abrupt onset scrotal pain, swelling
• Usually unilateral
o *Testicular atrophy in up to ~30-50% w/ mumps epididymoorchitis
o *Sterility rare, but risk ↑’s w/ bilateral orchitis
Virulence
- *nucleoprotein (NP)
- *matrix protein (M)
- *Fusion protein (F)
- *Hemagglutinin and neuraminidase on same spike (HN)
