non specific defense (infection and disease) Flashcards
How does skin defend from infection?
Stops entry of microorganisms unless cut openings protected by other defenses such as bacteria, sebum and sweat
how does bacteria prevent infection?
: live on skin in areas pathogens may occupy
how does sebum prevent bacteria?
oily secretions that contain substances that kill pathogenic bacteria
how does sweat prevent infection?
Contains salt and fatty acids that prevent growth of microorganisms (slightly acidic)
How do Mucous Membranes defend the body?
Line Body cavities to exterior
Secretes mucous: inhibits entry + traps pathogens
Digestive, urinary + reproductive tracts
Hairs protecting the body
Nose +ears
Along with mucous traps 90% particles
How does cilia protect body from infection?
In the Nose, trachea + airways
Beating moves mucous towards throat
- Cough or swallowed
Acid preventing infection
Prevents growth of microorganism
- Stomach + vaginas
Lysosome as protection
Enzyme that kills bacteria
Tears, saliva, sweat, nose secretion + tissue fluid
Cerebrum protecting body from infection
Ear wax: protects ear from infection
- Slightly acidic + contains lysosomes
Flushing Actions protecting body from infection
Bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, saliva, or urine
- Prevents growth + bacteria from reaching organs
e. g kidney or bladder
