anti-biotics Flashcards
1
Q
what do anti biotics do
A
Fight bacterial infection
There are two types of anti-biotics (bactericidal and bacteriostatic)
2
Q
what does bactericidal do?
A
Fast killing
Kills bacteria by changing the structure of cell wall or membrane disrupting action of essential enzymes
3
Q
what does bacteriostatic do?
A
Slow killing
Stops bacteria reproducing by interrupting protein synthesis
4
Q
how does antibiotic resistance occur
A
Overuse of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture
- Doctors prescribe anti-biotics to prevent instead of treat
5
Q
broad spectrum anti biotic
A
- Affect wide range of different types of bacteria
6
Q
Narrow spectrum
A
will only affect specific bacteria
7
Q
Multiple drug resistance
A
- Strains of bacteria resistant to most or all available types of antibiotics
8
Q
Total drug resistance
A
- Resistant to all known drugs, Australia affected by gonorrhoea
