Fever Flashcards
what is fever?
Elevation in body temperature
how does fever occur?
- Resets thermostat to be higher than normal (controlled by hypothalamus) -> pyrogen
Chemicals released by WBC that act on hypothalamus
what is interlukin-1
Interlukin-1 is produced by activated macrophages, dendritic and epithelial cells
is body temperature still being regulated?
still regulated in response to hot or cold, just set higher
how do thermoreceptors respond to temperature
detect body temperature then hypothalamus detects it is lower than set point
changes that occur during fever
Vasocontrisction in skin and shivering
- Conserve heat and increase heat production to increase body temperature
what is a fever break?
body’s thermostat reset too normal
what happens after a fever break
Increased body temperature inhibiting growth of bacteria and viruses
Speeds up rate of chemical reactions (body cells repair quicker)
Inhibit viral replication (interferons operate quicker)
