Infection and Disease Flashcards
different transmission
contact, bodily fluids, droplets, ingestion, airborne, vectors
what is an endospore bacteria
Tough multilayered structure which contains a copy of chromosome
Can survive harsh conditions (boiling or high pressure)
Can lie dormant
No metabolism
What is a virus
THEY’RE NON LIVING (bc they cannot reproduce)
whats bacteriophage?
virus that infects bacteria
what are DNA and RNA genomes surrounded by?
a protein coat aka capsid
how does a virus infect a bacteria?
- Virus infects cell DNA or RNA and induces cells to make more virus particles
- New virus particles leave host cells + infect others
- Cells damaged + die
whats a genome?
DNA or RNA, single linear or circular
whats a Capsid?
Protein shell, shape depends on type of virus
whats a viral envolope?
Some viruses, derived from host cell phospholipid + membrane proteins
Whats a crystallized virus?
Viable and infections
Lack Enzymes + ribosome
Can express genes + chemical synthesis inside host using its equipment + chemical pathways
Whats host range?
- Limited number of host species that virus can infect
- Host must have specific lock + key between viral surface proteins + receptors outside host cells
