Non-fermenters Flashcards
Name the 4 Genera calssified as non-fermenters
1) Pseudomons aeruginosa
2) Acinetobacter spp
3) Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
4) Bulkhoderia spp
Main microbological distinction between Pseudomonas spp & Acinetobacter spp?
Pseudomonas –> Oxidase (+)
Acinetobacter –> Oxidase (-)
Clinical syndroms of Pseudomonas spp
1) pulmonary infections:
- VAP- ventilator associated pneumonia
- HA- pneumonia
3) Catheter UTIs& BSIs
4) skin and soft tissue infection:
- green blue wounds - with horrobile smell
- Ecthyma gangrenosum (BSO)
- Folliculitis “Hot tube”
5) Ear and eye infection: Otitis externa
6) Bactermeia and infective endocarditis (esp in IVDUs)
Clinical syndroms of Acinetobacter spp
1) Pneumonia,
2) UTIs,
3)bacteraemia,
4) VAP,
5) surgical site
Which nosocomial infections are assocaited with Acinetobacter spp and Pseudomonas spp
Pneumonia, UTIs, bacteraemia, VAP, surgical site
Which patients are mostly affected by Bulkhoderia spp?
CF patient ( Bulkhoderia cepacia)
*CF: cystic fibrosis
( diabetic patients -Bulkhoderia pseudomallei)
Diagnosis of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
Gram (-) Motile bacilli , Oxidase (+), green-blue mucoid colonies ( with lemony smell), encapsulated, obligate anaerobe
Diagnosis of Acinetobacter spp
Gram (-) coccobacilli, oxidase (-), aerobic
Non-fermenters that casue Nosocomial infections?
Acinetobacter spp , Pseudomonas spp
Identify the following clinical syndromes. What pathogen is responsible for this?
1- “hot tube “ folliculitis
2- Ecthyma gangrenoum
3- Burn wound infection (green colour with awful smell!)
CA: Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Diagnosis of what agent?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
