What conditions is BPH characterized by?
Enlargement of the prostate, urinary outflow obstruction and proliferation of glands and stroma
What is clinical prostatism?
BPH severe enough to interfere with urination
Where does early nodular hyperplasia occur?
The transitional zone
BPH is shown. What are the typical histo findings?
Proliferation of epithelial cells of acini and ductules, SMC and stromal fibroblasts
What is the epithelial component in BPH composed of?
2 layers
- Polarizeed clear cuboidal cells
- Flattened basal cells betwixt the cuboidal acinar cells and the stroma
What is the typical clinical presentation of BPH?
Hx of decreased vigor of urinary stream and increasing urinary frequency
