Lower UTI
Why is risk of cystitis increased in females?
They have a shorter urethra than men
What bugs are the most common cause of cystitis?
Coliform bacteria:
- E. coli
- Proteus vulgaris
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Enterobacter
What is a common manifestation of bacterial cystitis?
Hemorrhagic cystitis
What are hallmarks of chronic cystitis?
Predominance of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and fibrosis of lamina propria
What are 4 types of chronic cystitis?
- Ulcerative cystitis
- Suppurative cystitis
- Pseudomembranous cystitis
- Calcific cystitis
What type of chronic cystitis is caused by indwelling catheters?
Ulcerative
What can cause suppurative cystitis?
Sepsis, pyelonephritis, purulent infections
What typically causes pseudomembranous cystitis?
Cyclophosphamide
What type of chronic cystitis is caused by schistosomiasis?
Calcific cystitis
What symptom do virtually all patients with cystitis exhibit?
Dysuria (painful urination)

Unknown cause typically affecting middle-aged women. Inflammation of the bladder wall and Hunner ulcers are observed
