Adenocarcinoma and Precursor Lesions of the Prostate Flashcards
What is considered the precursor lesion to BPH?
Prostaticc Intraepithelial Neoplasia
Describe Prostatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia
Prostatic ducts lined by cytologically atypical luminal cells and the concomitant decrease in basal cells
High grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia is shown. What are typical findings?
Atypical cells with enlarged nuclei and prominent nucleoli
What are typical markers for PIN?
aneuploidy, transforming growth factor -Alpha, type IV collagenase, bcl2
What are typical histo characteristics of prostatic adenocarcinoma?
- Increasing variability of gland size/configuration
- Papillary/cribiform patterns
- Little to no gland formation
What is the most typical nuclear finding in prostatic adenocarcinoma?
One or two conspicuous nucleoli in a background of chromatin clumped near the nuclear membrane
What is used to grade prostatic adenocarcinoma?
Gleason grading system
Where does prostate adenocarcinoma metastasize earliest?
Obturator lymph node
What are markers for prostate carcinoma?
PSA, alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase
