What is Stereotyping?
Stereotyping is when you judge a group of people who are different from you based on your own and/or others opinions and/or encounters.
What is gender stereotyping? Give an example.
Gender stereotyping is when people think that will behave in a certain way or will be able to do certain things because of their gender. Only women are nurses and only men are soldiers.
What is the problem with stereotyping?
The problem with stereotyping is that it can lead to discrimination and intolerance. It does not allow for individual differences.
What is sexism?
Sexism is a type of discrimination that is based on a person’s gender.
Girls are not allowed to join the soccer team or be a builder.
Boys cannot become nurses or join the netball team.
What is abuse?
Abuse means hurting somebody physically, mentally or emotionally. There are different kinds of abuse and different reasons for abusers to hurt people. Gender based abuse is abuse that specifically targets a person of the opposite gender.
How should you deal with stereotyping and discrimination?
We need to think carefully about what we think and say.
We need to gently and politely make others aware of when they are stereotyping and discrimination.
If a person is deliberately discriminatory, they will often become argumentative, angry or abusive, if they are confronted. If you know somebody like this, it might be a good idea to ask a responsible adult to help you talk to that person.
What are non-verbal cues? Name 4 of them.
