No Chapter 16-Electricity Flashcards
And Atom has a nucleus, What does the nucleus contain
The nucleus has positively charged protons surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons.
In an atom the number of protons and electrons is the same, why is this?
So that the charges cancel that each other and atom is neutral.
What is an insulator?
Insulator is a material that does not allow electrical currents to pass through it
What does an insulator do?
It holds onto the electric charge, the electric charge does not go anywhere, it is static
What is a conductor?
A conductor allows a current of electricity to pass through it. It cannot hold onto electric charges because it conducts them away
Give some examples of insulators and conductors
Conductor/copper, iron copper and aluminum
Insulator/rubber, plastic, wood
What happens when some materials are rubbed together?
The materials can lose electrons, this means But there are there any more positive charges then negative ones and the material becomes positively charged.
When are the materials are rubbed they can gain electrons what does this mean?
This means that there are more negative Chargers present then positive ones and the material becomes negatively charged.
If two balloons or negatively charged and hung some threads and brought close together what would happen?
They would push away from each other, because like electrical charges repel each other
If a positively charged material is brought near a negatively charged balloon what would the balloon do?
The balloon would move towards it because opposite charges attract
What is an Induced charge?
And I just charge is one that is made In a material buy a charged material without the two materials touching.
Give an example of induced charge
If you rub a plastic pen with cloth the pin or lose electrons and become positively charged. When the penis held over tiny pieces of paper it introduces a negative charge on their surfaces
How can you check induced charge?
I can be checked by moving the pain that you rubbed with a cloth, so that it would lose its electrons and become positively charged, very close to the paper, the paper jumps up to the pain because opposite charges attract.
What are the capacitors?
Charge stored in a devices are called capacitors
When is charge released from the capacitor?
When it is switched into a circuit with a conductor.
Today, capacitate is a tiny electron it devices which are used in digital sensors, what Do they do in the digital sensors?
They store electrical charge when it changes in light, pH or movement are being recorded
If two oppositely charged surfaces a highly charged a……… May pass between them
Spark
How can sparks be dangerous?
Sparks could cause an explosion in fuel vapor.
Give an example of two positively charged Surfaces that result in a spark
Lightning in a storm
What does a cell, battery, Affect a current?
It generates current when a circuit is complete.
How does a wire affect a current ?
The wire conducts current and often some resistance
How does a lamp affect the current
It charges some electrical energy to light and heat, offers some resistance to the current
How does the switch affect the current?
When closed, it conducts current, when open, air, an insulator, prevents current flow
What does in series circuit mean?
In a series circuit all the components are in a line, look at your photos to know what this looks like. Battery and the two lamps are in line
