Classification of Nitrous Oxide
Analgesic Gas
M.O.A of Nitrous Oxide (3)
-Blended mixture of 50% O2 and 50% N that has potent analgesic affects
-CNS Depressant with Analgesic Properties
-Effects only last 2-5min after administration
Indications of Nitrous Oxide (3)
-Acute pain associated w/ MSK injury, ACS, Renal Colic, Perinatal Burns & Abdominal pain
-Temp relief of Mild-Moderate pain from painful procedures
-Acute Anxiety
Contraindications of Nitrous Oxide
-Patients that Cannot comprehend verbal instructions or are intoxicated
-Gas Trapping Conditions (Poss bowel obstruction, Air embolism, Pneumothorax, Middle Ear infection, Decompression sickness
-COPD or signs of resp distress including SaO2 < 90%
-Head injury, altered Mental Status
Dose for Nitrous Oxide
Self Administered
Side Effects of Nitrous Oxide
-Dizziness
-Light Headedness
-Altered Mental Status
-Hallucinations
-Apnea
-Nausea & Vomiting
Precautions for Nitrous Oxide
-Use in well-ventilated area (inhalation by provider possible)
- Any time > 50% O2 is required
-Gases may separate at -6•C
