Acetylsalicylic Acid Flashcards
What are it’s classifications?
-Antiplatelet
-NSAID
-Antipyretic
-Analgesic
What is it’s Mechanism of Action?
Inactivates cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme which decreases the production of prostaglandins in the tissue, blocking the pain receptor’s sensitivity, and decreases inflammation. Due to this inactivation of COX, thromboxone A2 production is also inhibited, which is responsible for platelet aggregation.
When is it indicated?
-Acute Coronary Syndrome
-Acute Myocardial Infarction
-Unstable Angina
When is it contraindicated?
-GI Bleeds
-Asthmatics Sensitive to ASA
-Hypersensitivity
What is the Dose for ASA?
160mg-325mg PO (chewed)
What are the Side Effects of ASA?
Indigestion, gastric bleeding, urticaria, Anaphylaxis, nausea and vomiting
What are the Precautions with ASA?
Patients on other Platelet Inhibitors
