Glucagon Flashcards
Classification of Glucagon
Anti-Hypoglycaemic
MOA of Glucagon
-Stimulates release of Glycogen (Gluconeogenesis) from the liver for Glycogenolysis (inc. BGL)
-Smooth muscle relaxation
Indications of Glucagon
Hypoglycaemia (BGL <4.0 mmoL/L & unable to take oral glucose or IV d50w
Contraindications for Glucagon
-Hypersensitivity
-Pheochromocytoma (tumour in adrenal gland)
Dose for Glucagon
Hypoglycaemia:
Adults- 1mg IM, SQ, may repeat in 20 minutes if required
Pediatric- 0.5mg IM, SQ (<20kg)
Side effects of Glucagon
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Rebound Hyperglycemia
-Hypotension
-Tachycardia
Precautions for Glucagon
-Effective only if there are sufficient stores of Glycogen within the Liver
-Use with Caution in patients with Cardiovascular or Renal Disease
