What are its classifications?
-Anticholinergic
-Parasympatholytic
What are its mechanisms of action?
-Causes bronchodilation by competitive inhibition of cholinergic receptors on bronchial smooth muscle
-Blocks the action of acetylcholine, which inhibits parasympathetic stimulation, decreasing bronchial secretions
-Dries respiratory tract secretions
What are its indications for use?
-Bronchial Asthma
-Bronchospasm associated with COPD.
What contraindications does it have?
-Known hypersensitivity
-Is not indicated for acute treatment of bronchospasm for which rapid response is required
-Ischemic chest pain
-Acute narrow-angle glaucoma.
What are the dosages? hint 1/2 to get ped dose
A: -250-500mcg mixed with
ventolin q 20 minutes, 2
doses
-2-4 puffs q 20 minutes x 3
doses
P: -125-250mcg mixed with
ventolin and/or NS to a
minimum of 2cc
-1-2 puffs
What side effects does it have?
-Palpitations
-Anxiety
-Dizziness
-Headache
-Nervousness
-Rash
-Nausea/Vomiting
What are the precautions for this medication?
-Narrow Angle Glaucoma
-Pts with BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) and/or Bladder-Neck obstruction.
