Procedures Prior To Taking Runway
Talk - Switch to tower, request permission for departure, OR make appropriate radio call on CTAF
Clear - Visually Check
Line Up Checklist - Execute
Take Off Brief
Rotate at 55 kts
Climb at 73 kts
Malfunction prior to rotate - abort take off
Malfunction After rotate - climb to 1000 ft, enter the pattern, begin troubleshooting
Engine failure with runway remaining - Set it back down
Engine failure below 800’ - select landing site within 30* of the nose
Engine failure above 800’ - enter low key for nearest suitable runway
Procedures for Normal Takeoff
- Select Reference
- Power - 2000RPM
- Check Instruments
- Power to full
- Maintain Direction
- Airspeed Alive
- Rotate - 55 knots
- Accelerate - 73 knots
- Pitch for Vy (73)
Procedures for XW Takeoff
- Select Reference
- Aileron - Full into wind
- Power - 2000 RPM
- Instruments - Green
- Power to full
- Maintain Direction
- Airspeed Alive
- Aileron - Gradually reduce
- Rotate 55
- Crab into wind
- Accelerate to 73
- Pitch for Vy 73
Procedure for Level Speed Change
- 90 KIAS
- Carb Heat - On
- Power - 1500 RPM
- Attitude - Increase pitch to maintain altitude
- Flaps - Extend in the white arc
- Trim - As required
- Power - Increase to 2100
- Attitude - pitch for airspeed, power for altitude
- Trim - As required
- Clear airspace
- Turn - 90 Degrees (10-15AOB) then reverse
Recovery
- Power - 2200-2300
- Carb Heat - Off
- Flaps - Retract incrementally
- Attitude - reduce to maintain level flight
- Accelerate - 90 KIAS
- Trim
Procedure for Power Off Stall
90 KIAS
- Clear
- Carb Heat - On
- Power - Idle
- Flaps - Extend incrementally
- Airspeed - 65
- Pitch - 5-10*
Recovery
- Relax back pressure
- Max - Throttle
- Carb Heat - Off
- Level Wings
- Ball - Right rudder
- Flaps - raise to 20*
- Pitch - Pitch smoothly
- Flaps - Retract remaining, level off next 500’
Procedure for Power On Stall
90 KIAS
- Clear
- Carb Heat - On
- Power - 1000rpm
- Airspeed - 65 KIAS
- Power - 2000 RPM
- Carb Heat - Off
- Pitch - 15-20*
Recovery
- Relax
- Max
- Level
- Ball
- Pitch to level off
90 KIAS
Process for Downwind
- Airspeed - 85
- Altitude - 1000 AGL
- Spacing - Halfway up strut
- Report - Bolo —, midfield downwind
- Checklist (SFML - Abeam: C, idle, F)
- Maintain track
Transition Procedures (4 T’s)
- Transition
- Carb Heat On
- Power to 1000 or idle
- Flaps full - Trim - 2 full down
- Turn - 1200-1500 past runway threshold (15AOB)
- Talk - Announce turn to Base leg at non-towered fields. Towered field will clear for landing before abeam position
Procedure at 90* Position (Base Leg)
- Altitude - 500’ AGL
- Airspeed - 65 KIAS
- Power - Adjust power for 3* glidepath
- Clear - Visually clear final
- Turn - Adjust AOB as needed
Groove Procedures
- Centerline - Intercept extended runway centerline
- Glidepath - Adjust sight picture
- Verify - Checklists and landing clearance, announce landing check complete, cleared to land
- Adjust - Continously
- Heels on the floodboard
- Flare - Nose up attitude to ensure main wheels touch first
Normal Flare Procedures
At 10-15’ above runway
- Look - Look at far end for sense of sink rate
- Power - Redue to idle
- Attitude - Increase pitch
- Centerline - Maintain
a. Rudder for nose
b. Ailerons stop drift - Attitude - Adjust pitch, top of cowling on horizon
- Brakes - As req
Turn Pattern Procedure
90 KIAS
- Clear Area: 30* turn, 15 AOB, reverse
- Clear: 90* turn, 30 AOB, reverse
- Clear: 180 turn, 45 AOB, reverse
- Rollout on original heading
- Reset power to normal cruise
Touch and Go Landing
After TD
- Rudder - Maintain runway centerline with rudder
- Aileron - into XW
- Flaps - Up
- Carb Heat - Off
- Power - Smoothly apply full power
- Takeoff
- Crosswind - execute turn 400’ AGL
Waveoffs
- Power - Smooth to full
- Carb Heat - Off
- Attitude - Pitch above horizon
- Flaps - retract incrementally
- Attitude - Pitch for Vy
