Revise Humanism and Social learning theory
Vicarious reinforcement
Learning by observing the consequences of others behaviour
Four mediational processes
Attention, Retention, Reproduction, Motivation
Bandura’s characteristics impacting imitation
Similarity to model
Simplicity of task
Level of aggression
Bandura’s study aim
Investigate if social behaviours are acquired through observation and imitation
Bandura’s study sample
36 boys and 36 girls aged 3-6 years old, split into 8 groups based on gender of child, aggression of role model, gender of role model and a control group of 24
Bandura’s study method
Aggression arousal, then they observed the role model (either aggressive or non aggressive) interact with bobo doll, then put in a room with variety of objects and behaviour observed for 20 minutes
Bandura’s study results
Aggressive model: more aggression
Boys: more physical aggression
Boys and girls: similar level of verbal aggression
Girls with male model: more physical aggression
Girls with female model: more verbal aggression
Bandura’s study evaluation
Low ecological validity
Unrepresentative sample
Laboratory study
Self efficacy
An individual’s belief in their capacity to execute behaviours
Imitation
When an individual observes a behaviour from a role model and then copies it
Identification
An individual is influenced by someone because they want to be like them
Modelling
When someone is influential to an individual, so their behaviour is imitated
Hierarchy of needs
Self actualisation
Esteem
Love and belonging
Safety and security
Physiological
Humans as self determining with free will
People are active agents who can determine our own development.
Incongruence
A person’s sense of self and ideal self do not match, so they have negative perspectives of themselves.
