news values are general guidelines and criteria that determine the worth of a news story
Galtung and Ruge
came up with one of the best known lists of news values based on analysis of Norwegian news overage;
- Extraordinariness: how rare vent is
- Reference to elite persons: are famous people on the story
- Negativity: bad news more exciting
Unambiguity: easy to interpret
Brighton and Foy
- Brighton and Foy criticizes lists of news values believe they assume connects exists among journalists about what is newsworthy. However, because of diversity of both the media and its audience this is unlikely
Davis
Churnalism: relies on existing research of spin doctored and journalists are just passive
The 1999 millennium bug story that was written about loads of journalists who had no idea whether was true
Herman and Chomsky
propaganda model of the media, capitalistic forces shape media output. Media businesses are profit-making and funded by profit-making so are unlikely to be critical of capitalism —> reliant on government and businesses as source of info so cannot threaten this source as can threaten to remove licensing and advertising
Bagdikan
all media owners in their USA part of wider power elite —> leads to conversation in media (reinforcing dominant ideology and tabloidization)
Manning
less powerful groups have to pass down their message in order for them to be heard = middle of the road consensus
Schlesinger
suggests that the media don’t always act in interest of the powerful (e.g. politicians are careful about what they say as they know the extend the media can shape public perceptions and influence the voting behavior or put them under pressure to resign)
McQuail
the news is not objective or impartial. It is a selective process. Gatekeepers drive what is important to show and how to cover them
