Newborn (Transitional Phases) Flashcards
The neonatal period includes:
the time from birth through day 28 of life.
The major adaptations associated with transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life occur during?
The first 6 to 8 hours after birth.
What is the first stage of the transition period?
First period of reactivity
How long does the first transition period last?
up to 30 mins after birth.
During the first stage of transition what is significant about the infants heart rate?
HR increases rapidly to 160 to 180 but gradually falls after 30 mins or so to a baseline rate of 100 to 120.
During the first stage of transition what is significant about the infants respirations?
Are irregular, with a rate between 60 and 80 breaths/min.
During the first stage of transition what can be found when auscultation lungs?
Fine crackles can be present on auscultation.
During the first stage of transition what is significant about the infants respiratory?
Audible grunting, nasal flaring, and retractions of the chest can be present. These should cease within the first hour of birth.
During the first stage of transition what is significant about the infants behavior?
The infant is alert and may have spontaneous startles, tremors, crying, and head movement from side to side.
During the first stage of transition what is significant about the infants bowels?
Bowel sounds are audible, and meconium may be passed.
What is the second stage of the transition period?
The period of decreased responsiveness
How long does the second transition period last?
60 to 100 mins
What is significant about the second transition period?
After the first period of reactivity the newborn either sleeps or has a marked decrease in motor activity.
During the second stage of transition what is significant about the infant’s integumentary system?
The infant is pink
During the second stage of transition what is significant about the infant’s respirations?
Are rapid and shallow (up to 60 breaths/min) but unlabored.
