caput succedaneum
occurs after prolonged labor, occurs above periosteum, CROSSES SUTURE LINES, resolves over several days
cephalohematoma
occurs after prolonged labor, occurs below periosteum, DOES NOT cross SUTURE LINES, resolves over several weeks
subgaleal hematoma
occurs after traumatic delivery, bleeding within subgaleal space, presents shortly after birth and requires inpatient monitoring for anemia, DIC, and/or shock
halo scalp ring
occurs after prolonged labor likely d/t hypoxia, band of alopecia in ring pattern, hair may regrow, follow up is necessary for developmental issues
subcutaneous fat necrosis
healthy full term neonates, nodules at fat-rich sites (cheek, butt, thighs, back), + granulomatous inflammation, presents in first few weeks of life and resolves over several weeks/months, screen for HYPERCALCEMIA.
May lead to scarring
sclerema neonatorum
debilitated newborns, diffuse hardening of skin mainly on back, lacks granulomatous inflammation, complications: sepsis, shock. process can reverse if underlying conditions are treated
