Neurons: Conduction and Transmission Flashcards
What is conduction?
the ELECTRICAL signal that is generated by a neuron that travels WITHIN the neuron from one location to another
What is transmission?
the CHEMICAL signal that is generated by one neuron and received by another neuron or effector tissue (ie: muscle)
Look at the slide of all the different parts of a neuron
Myelination in the PNS is known as this type of cell and myelination in the CNS is known as that

What do selective barriers do?
excludes certain substances that float in the surrounding fluid from entering the cell
establishment of potential difference allows…..
the environment on either side to be different
- Enzymatic proteins attract reacting molecules to the membrane surface
- Those needed for metabolic pathways are aligned adjacent to each other to act like an assembly line for the reactions.
the above describes what?
catalyzing reactions
What are the functions of the cell membrane?
