Neurons Flashcards
What is a Neuron?
A neuron is an individual nerve cell that receives, processes, and/or transmits information to other cells.
What are the 3 different types of neurons?
Sensory
inter neuron
motor neuron
What is the main function of the Sensory Neuron?
This is received from both our external and internal environments then transmitted to the CNS.
They help us to sense the external world and monitor changes within our bodies. They receive and carry sensory information.
What is the main function of the inter neuron?
They are the link between sensory and motor neurons, relaying information from one to the other.
What is the main function of a motor neuron?
They carry messages from the CNS to the cells in skeletal muscles, organs and glands to stimulate activity. They help control the function of internal organs such as the heart, lungs and intestines. Skeletal muscles respond to messages from the CNS to start, stop or change movement.
What is the function of a dendrite?
Detects and receives information from other neurons. They are provide a site where other neurons can connect
What is the Soma?
The body of the neuron. Contains the nucleus
What is the nucleus?
Contains genetic material. Helps with keeping the neuron happy.
What is the Mylein sheith?
A white fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the axon. This protects the axon from interference from other neurons. It also allows rapid movement of the message along the axon.
What is the axon?
Pathway in which the neural message travels
What are the axon buttons?
Exit pathways for neural messages to make their way to other neurons
