Neurones Flashcards
Name 4 types of glia that are present in the CNS
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes
Ependyma
Microglia
Name 3 types of glia that are present in the PNS
Schwann cells
Satellite cells
Microglia
Describe the structure of a cell body
Contain the nucleus
Nissl substance present- for protein synthesis
May be dendrites
What is meant by ‘myelinated’?
An axon is insulated by a myelin sheath made up of Schwann cells
What are the sections between myelin sheaths called on an axon?
Nodes of Ranvier
Why can a myelinated with a diameter greater than 1um conduct faster than an unmyelinated axon of the same size?
The myelin sheath acts as an insulator. Impulses can ‘jump’ between Nodes of Ranvier (saltatory conduction)
What is Wallerian degeneration?
Removal of a damaged nerve by phagocytosis
What are glia?
Cells which ‘glue’ the nervous system together
