Histology Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A collection of cells specialised to perform a particular function
What are the 4 types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
What is the size of a human red blood cell?
7.2 um (in diameter)
What is a biopsy?
The removal of a small piece of tissue from the body for microscopic examination
What is a smear?
A swap of cells
What is a curettage?
A small spoon
When can ‘direct incision’ be used to obtain a biopsy?
Cells are accessible from the outside
What are the names of the two most common stains?

What parts of the cell does Haematoxylin stain and what colour?
Acidic parts eg. nucleus
Blue
What parts of the cell does Eosin stain and what colour?
Basic parts eg. proteins
Pink
What is histology?
The study of the structure of tissues by staining and microscopy
