Glandular tissue Flashcards
What is meant by an ‘exocrine’ gland
A gland with a duct
What is meant by an ‘endocrine’ gland?
‘Ductless gland’
Secretes directly into the bloodstream
Give an example of a unicellular gland
Goblet cell- found in the respiratory tract, secretes mucus
Name the two main shapes that a gland can be
Acinar (alveolar)
Tubular
What is meant by a ‘mucus gland’?
Secretion contains mucus which is rich in mucins
What is meant by a ‘serous gland’?
Secretions are often enzymes and are watery and free of mucus
Describe merocrine secretion
A membrane bound component approaches the outer cel l membrane. The membranes fuse and the contents are released into the extracellular space.
Describe Apocrine secretion
A non-membrane bound structure eg. lipid, pushes the outer cell membrane up. Part of the membrane breaks off from the cell and wraps around the structure.
Describe Holocrine secretion
The cell disintegrates and all the contents are released
What is endocytosis?
Material from outside the cell is engulfed by the cell
What is glycosylation?
Addition of sugars to proteins and lipids in the golgi apparatus
Why is glycosylation important?
Increases specificity by making a more complex shape
What is a gland?
An epithelial cell or collection of cells specialised for secretion
