Neuromuscular junction Flashcards
Describe extrafusal fibers
They are striated multi-nucleated muscle fibers
What innervates extrafusal fibers
Alpha lower motor neuron
Describe intrafusal fibers
They have an enlarged middle portion called a muscle spindle and they contain nuclear bag and nuclear chain receptors
What innervates intrafusal fibers?
Gamma motor neuron
Which type of fibers is found in nuclear bag receptors?
Type 1a motor afferent fiber
Which type of fibers is found in nuclear chain receptors?
Type Ia and Type 2 motor afferent fibers
Describe Type 1 fibers
Large diameter, highest degree of myelination, highest conductivity
Describe Type 1a fibers
Run in parallel and set muscle length, tell CNS about the rate of change of muscle length
Describe Type 1b fibers
Run in series with extrafusal fibers and set muscle tension
Describe Type 3 fibers
Smallest diameter, least myelinated, least conductivity
Describe Type 4 fibers
Unmyelinated
Describe Type 2 fibers
They tell the CNS about the length of the muscle and if there has a been a change in muscle length
Describe myotatic reflex
Myotatic reflex is 1a reflex, it regulates the length of the muscle
Examples of myotatic reflexes
Autogenic excitation
Synergist excitation
Reciprocal inhibition
Renshaw inhibition
Which myotatic reflex does not involve an interneuron?
Autogenic excitation
