Q

What is acetylcholine

A

most common excitatory and inhibitory, stimulates skeletal muscles but inhibits cardiac muscles. as with most neurotransmitters it is broken down by an enzyme called cholinesterase released from the presynaptic neuron so that the effect of the neurotransmitter is not prolonged

Q

What is noradrenaline/norepinephrine

A

Mainly excitatory. compliments the actions of the hormone adrenaline/epinephrine. important part of the sympathetic nervous system which prepares the body for fight or flight response.

Q

What are endorphins

A

act as natural painkillers in synapses in the brain: also effects emotional areas of the brain. generall inhibitory

Q

What is dopamine

A

generally excitatory. elevates mood and is linked to sensations of pleasure (such as eating) and brain synapses in control of body movements.
