Chemical Reactions and Energy Changes Flashcards
What is biochemistry
Study of activites and properties of molecules that are important to living systems
What is a cell
The smallest unit of life that can exist on its own as a single-celled organism or part of multi-celled organism. Cells and the components within cells are made up of atoms and molecules.
Which four elements are the most common in the human body.
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen. Making up a combined 96% of the human body.
How much of the human body does each element take up
Oxygen: 65%
Carbon: 18%
Hydrogen: 10%
Nitrogen: 3%
Why does life exist
Because of chemical reactions that occur in cells. In a chemical reaction, atoms of elements and compounds are rearranged to become different substances with different properties.
What are reactants
They are transformed into products. During the process, some chemical bonds break and new ones form. Energy is either absorbed or released.
What is ATP
ATP is an energy-carrying molecule that releases energy when it loses a phosphate In any chemical reaction, the difference in energy absorbed to break bonds and energy is released when new bonds forming results in a NET absorption or release of energy. In the breakdown of ATP, overall energy is released. This energy can be used by cells to carry out life functions.
