Dx: muscle biopsy shows perineural denervation
Simplest test is blood test showing presence of SMN gene mutation
Lead poisoning treatment
Children should be screened b/w ages 12-24 month well child visit
Lead level b/w 45-70 repeat levels in 1 month and tx with dimercaptosuccinic acid (succimer)
Lead level of more than 70 immediate hospitalization & 2 drugs EDTA + BAL
Complications of meningitis
Hearing loss due to inflammatory damage to cochlea
Intellectual/behavioral disabilities
Epilepsy
Cerebral palsy
NF-1 features
Cafe au lait macules Axillary and inguinal freckling Lisch nodules Neurofibromas Optic pathway gliomas
Friedreich ataxia manifestations
Neurologic dysfunction, cardiomyopathy, diabetes mellitus
Symptoms, dysarthria, loss of DTR Kilmer progressive gait and limb ataxia and adolescence loss of position and vibratory senses due to deterioration of the dorsal column, scoliosis.
