Neuroglial Cells Flashcards
Astrocytes
CNS
Function: support & regulate movement of metabolites & waste; maintain blood brain barrier; protect neurons
Protoplasmic - in gray matter, branching cytoplasmic processes
Fibrous - in white matter, straight cytoplasmic processes
Oligodendrocytes
CNS
Function: myelinate axon
Has nodes of ranvier
Note: 1 oligodendrocyte myelinates many axons
Microglia
CNS
Function: phagocytosis of bacteria; remove debris & injured tissue
Originates from hematopoietic cell
Ependymal Cells
CNS
Epithelial lining of CNS cavities
Location: Choroid plexus
Schwann Cells
PNS
Function: Myelinate neurons; scaffolding; clean debris; support cell
Note: Several cells myelinate 1 axon
Satellite Cells
PNS
Function: Surround cell body; regulate perineuronal environment & metabolic exchange; electric insulator (doesn’t make myelin)
Cuboidal cells
