GAG Types Flashcards
Kerantan Sulfates (KS)
Found in: cartilage, cornea
Sulfated in: position 1 of galactose
Most heterogenous in sugars
Dermatan Sulfates (DS)
Found in: blood vessels, skin, heart
Heparin Sulfates
Found in: basement membrane, cell surface
Sulfated: glucuronic acid or iduronic acid
Function: cell-cell recognition
Heparin
Found in: mast cells that line arteries of lung, liver, spleen
Sulfated: iduronyl
Function: anticoagulant - inhibits thrombin, ends blood clotting
Largest amount of sulfates & negative charges
Hyaluronic acid
Found in: vitreous humor, synovial fluid, cartilage, loose connective tissue
Not sulfated nor covalently attached to protein
Connected to core proteins via link proteins
Function: embryogenesis, morphogenetic, wound repair
Chondroitin sulfates
Found in: cartilage, bone, ligaments, aorta
Sulfated: position 4 or 6
Most abundant type
