Classification Of Connective Tissue Flashcards
Mesenchyme
Type: Embryonic connective tissue
Components: Mesenchymal cells, Stem cells, Abundant ground substance
Appearance: Spindle-shaped cells, sparse reticular fibers
Mucus
Type: Embryonic connective tissue
Components: Few mesenchymal cells, Ground substance: Hyaluronan
Appearance: Warton’s jelly
Location: Umbilical cord, Vitreous humor, Cardiac
Loose/Areolar connective tissue
Type: Connective tissue proper
Components: High cell:fiber ratio
Location: Beneath epithelial lining, Lamina propria of mucus membranes of respiratory, urinary, & digestive systems
Notes: Rich blood supply, Functions in metabolism
Dense Irregular
Type: Connective tissue proper
Components: High fiber:cell ratio
Appearance: No orientation of fibers (functions in stress resistance)
Location: Organ capsules, Periosteum, Dermis
Dense regular
Type: Connective tissue proper
Components: Fibroblasts, Collagen fibers type I
Appearance: Orientation of fibers (functions in tensile strength)
Location: Tendons, Ligaments, Aponeuroses
Ground substance
Components: GAGs, Proteoglycans, Glycoproteins
Functions: Binds cells to fibers, Lubricant for cell migration, Barrier for bacteria, Tissue tensile strength
Reticular connective tissue
Type: Specialized
Components: Reticular fibers - Type III Collagen, Fibroblasts
Function: Framework for cell constituents of tissues & organs
Location: Nerve tissue, Endocrine tissue, Liver, Hemopoietic & Lymphatic tissue, Bone marrow, Lymph nodes, Spleen
Elastic connective tissue
Type: Specialized
Components: Elastic fibers - elastin (Gly, Pro, Desmosine), fibrilin microfibrils
Function: Elasticity
Location: Ligamentum flavum, Vocal ligament, Suspensory ligament of penis
