neurodiversity affirming practices - exam 1 Flashcards
intent vs impact
positive intent does not always mean the impact is as expected
language
identity first unless otherwise specified
disabled & autism are not bad words
avoid “high functioning” & “low functioning” –> don’t really tell us anything
how we talk about behaviors –> “difficult” but why??
goal writing
does the goal benefit the autistic person or the neurotypical people around them
are we trying to make them act or appear neurotypical
will it help them more than hurt them
is it still necessary w/ accommodations
interventions
bodily autonomy
person led therapy
reinforcement
focus on intrinsic motivation
functional goals that the STUDENT creates will almost always have intrinsic rewards –> focus on these
don’t use food
whole body listening
bad
if the child is focusing so hard on keeping their body still & focused, they aren’t learning
work w/ them to find what best supports their learning
