Q
Neurobiology of schizophrenia
A
Structural brain abnormalities are present at the onset of illness. Brain volume is decreased along with ventricular enlargement. There is reduced grey matter in several regions including prefrontal cortex, medial and superior temporal lobe structures, and the thalamus. The reduced activity of the prefrontal cortex resulting in ‘hypofrontality’. Relatives of patients with schizophrenia often show mild brain abnormailities similar to those of people with full blown illness.
