Neuro System Flashcards
what is Alzheimer’s
form of dementia, degeneration of the cerebral cortex
how does alzheimers present
gradual impairment of: short term memory, intellect, reasoning and language, personality changes, hallucinations and delusions
causes of alzheimers
age, genetics, head injury
effects of alzheimers on the body
loss or damage to the synapses in the brain, causing neural atrophy within the brain. damage to synapses occurs due to build up of amyloid plaques which cause delays in transmission of impulses, build up of the protein tau causes neural pathways to become clumped, further accelerating neural atrophy, over time this causes parts of the brain to shrink
what is MS
chronic autoimmune disease that affects the CNS
how does MS present
fatigue, difficulty walking, blurred vision, incontinence, numbness or tingling in body, muscle stiffness and spasms, problems with balance, coordination, thinking, learning and planning
causes of MS
genetics, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, diet and obesity in early life, women
effects of MS on the body
MS causes inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath which disrupts the communication between the brain and the rest of the body- immune system is attacking the myelin sheath leading to slower signals and sometimes no signals flowing along the neuron
what is visceral pain
pain coming from the internal thoracic, pelvic, or abdominal organs. pain is normally vague and poorly localised
brain structure associated with pain
somatosensory area of the cerebral cortex
