Endocrine System Flashcards
what is diabetes
disorder of the pancreatic islets
type 1= pancreas does not produce insulin
type 2= pancreas functions well, the liver cannot recognise the insulin
how does diabetes present
polydipsia, polyuria, increased hunger, weight loss, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, blurred vision
what causes type 1 diabetes
autoimmune disease- genetics
what causes type 2 diabetes
obesity, lack of exercise, age, hypertension
effects of type 1 diabetes on the body
deficiency or absence of insulin secretion due to destruction of beta cells of islet of Langerhans. insulin therefore cannot perform its function of increasing absorption of glucose into the liver. therefore glucose builds up in the body
effects of type 2 diabetes on the body
defective insulin secretion and , insulin receptors on the surface of the cell may become damaged and therefore cannot extract the insulin they require, therefore glucose cannot be broken down by insulin
what is hyperglycaemia
raised blood glucose level
how does hyperglycaemia present
increased thirst, increased urination, blurred vision, nausea
what causes hyperglycaemia
cells are unable to take up and use glucose from the bloodstream, conversion of glucose to glycogen in the liver is diminished, glucogenesis from protein
