Neuro Pharmacology Flashcards
What is pharmacodynamics?
A drug’s effect/mechanism of action. What the drug does to you
What is pharmacokinetics?
Drug’s concentration and access within a particular body tissue
What is bioavailability?
Concentration of drug reaching circulation
What is the Biphasic pattern?
Alpha phase: rapid redistribution from circulation to body tissues
Beta Phase: gradual decr. in concentration due to metabolism and excretion
What is a ligand?
A molecule that binds specifically to another molecule, usually a larger one and serves a biological purpose
What is an agonist?
Ligands that bind to receptors, alter receptor functions and elicit physiologic responses
What are antagonists?
Ligands that bind to receptors, but fail to elicit physiological responses on their own, and block or dampen agonists
What are the types of antagonists?
Competitive and Noncompetitive
What is an inverse agonist?
Ligands that bind to receptors, but produce opposite effects compare to agonists
What is Potency?
Dose of drug required to observe an effect
What is efficacy?
Related to maximal effect of a drug
What is ED50?
The drug dose that produces desired effect in 50 percent of test subjects
What is LD50?
Lethal dose of a drug for 50% of the test population
What is the therapeutic index?
LD50/ED50; larger number is better
