Neuro General Flashcards
What is a pet scan
Nuclear medicine procedure, uses radioactive substance, evaluates metabolism of organ
Carotid duplex
Ultrasound and pulse Doppler combo, non-invasive. Increased velocity equals stenosis
EEG
Measures brains electrical activity, assess his presence and type of seizure.
How long do you withhold stimulants before an EEG
Eight hours
How long does an EEG last
20 to 40 minutes
EMG
Assess his nerve innervation, discomfort due to needle insertion, used to assess ALS & MG
Mylogram
X-ray of spinal cord, contrast injected into subarachnoid space
Lumbar puncture
Used to obtain CSF for diagnostics
Pre-procedure for lumbar puncture
Empty bladder, lateral recumbent position/fetal position, or placed on tilt table, sign consent
Post procedure lumbar puncture
May have to lay flat for an hour (no evidence to support), Monitor for spinal headache
Treatment for spinal headache
Conservative treatment is bedrest and analgesics. Moderate to severe pain would require epidural blood patch, or IV caffeine
Nerve conduction test
Measure speed of conduction through a nerve. Can be repetitive nerve stimulation study or single fiber EMG. Both used to diagnose MG
Evoked Potential test is used to diagnose what
MS
What are the three types of evoked potential
- Visual: checkerboard screen
- Auditory: series of clicking notices in each ear
- Sensory: short electrical impulses to arm or leg
Responses are recorded
