What is ALS
Relentlessly progressive an incurable neurodegenerative Disorder that causes weakness disability and death
Survival rate
Usually 3 to 5 years. 10% can live 10 years or more
Clinical manifestations
Asymmetric limb weakness is the most common, fatigue, dysarthria, dysphagia, muscle atrophy in spaces Citi, twitching of face or tongue, respiratory muscle weakness which is life-threatening
Are these patients still cognitively intact as the condition worsens

Riluzole
Only FDA approved medication for ALS, not a cure but extend survival time
Plan of care
Moderate Lee intense endurance type exercises for trunk and limbs, support cognitive and emotional functions, facilitate communication, speech therapy as needed, maintain NPO if major risk for aspiration, pain assessment, minimize risk of injury, provide diversional activities, facility patient and family anticipatory craving
