Neuro Assessment Flashcards
what makes up the Central and peripheral nervous systems
Central- brain and spinal cord peripheral- peripheral nerves and cranial nerves
cerebral cortex
which is mostly made of gray matter is the center for memory reasoning thinking and feeling bar highest function.
thalamus
relay for sensory impulse
hypothalamus
temperature sleep emotions pituitary responses
medulla
heart rates respiratory rate GI functions
pons
motor neurons and pathways
cerebellum
motor coordination muscle-tone equilibrium
brainstem herniation signs
respiratory drive heart and GI function
cerebrum function is responsible for 5
level of Consciousness orientation mental status cognitive function communication
how do we test the level of consciousness and what categories are in it
Glasgow Coma Scale eye opening verbal response motor response
how do we assess orientation
person place time situation
how do we assess mental status
are they awake and alert Cooperative wasn’t clear speech concentration and memory
cerebellum functions include
motor coordination equilibrium muscle tone
motor function assessment
do they obey commands, arm and leg strength spontaneously or results of noxious stimuli withdrawal from pain the decerebrate or decorticate
decorticate
plantarflex,, internal knee rotation, Flex wrists and elbows adducted arms
decerebrate
plantarflex, pronated arms with flexed wrists, extended elbows adducted forearms
pupil
cranial nerve 3, notes the size shape symmetry accommodation
one sided pupil dilation
something is going on on that side of the brain
when elderly fall
concern for subdural hematoma do hourly maybe 15 min neuro checks and assessments for pupil changes or changes in levels of consciousness
Normal pupil size
2-4mm in bright light and 4-8mm in the dark
