Symptoms and signs suggesting spinal cord lesion

A
  • bilateral but often asymmetrical pain / symptoms
  • motor symptoms eg clumsiness

o/e:
- mixed UMN and LMN signs
- sensory level
- increased sphincter tone
- autonomic dysfunction if lesion above T6 - HTN, bradycardia, urianry retention, constipation, sweating, flushing

Symptoms and signs cauda equina

A
  • bilateral sciatic pain
  • perianal numbness
  • fecal incontience
  • urinary dysfunction (incontience or decreased awareness of filling = retention)

o/e:
- decreased anal tone (LMN)

Symptoms and signs radiculopathy

A

radicualr pain (sharp, shooting)
unilateral
can cause weakness (rare)

o/e
- LMN signs ONLY - this counts as “objective neuro signs” and would be acted in more quickly
