Neuro anatomy Flashcards
How many of each vertebrae?
Think about meal times… 7am, 12pm, 5pm
Cervical - 7
thoracic - 12
Lumbar - 5
Sacrum (5, fused)
Coxyx (4, fused)
Symptoms and signs suggesting spinal cord lesion
- bilateral but often asymmetrical pain / symptoms
- motor symptoms eg clumsiness
o/e:
- mixed UMN and LMN signs
- sensory level
- increased sphincter tone
- autonomic dysfunction if lesion above T6 - HTN, bradycardia, urianry retention, constipation, sweating, flushing
Symptoms and signs cauda equina
- bilateral sciatic pain
- perianal numbness
- fecal incontience
- urinary dysfunction (incontience or decreased awareness of filling = retention)
o/e:
- decreased anal tone (LMN)
Symptoms and signs radiculopathy
radicualr pain (sharp, shooting)
unilateral
can cause weakness (rare)
o/e
- LMN signs ONLY - this counts as “objective neuro signs” and would be acted in more quickly
At what vertebral level is the end of the spinal cord?
L1 usually
Complication of lumbar spinal stenosis
cauda equina
