Immune system Flashcards
What pathogens does the immune system need to recognise and attack?
Viruses
Bacteria
Fungi
Protozoa
Parasitic worms
What are examples of barrier immunity?
Skin
Mucous membranes
Epithelium
Respiratory cilia
Stomach acid
Tears (lysozyme)
Microbiome
What is part of the innate immune system?
WBC and complement system
WBCs:
neutrophils
eosinophils
basophils
mast cells
macrophage
monocyte
dendritic cells
natural killer cells
What is the complement system
Part of the innate immune system
Plasma proteins produced in the liver
Complements the rest of the immune system via:
opsonization - acts as an opsonin whereby they attach to cell wall and this allows phagocytes to bind and do phagocytosis
cell lysis
chemotaxis - attracts neutrophils and macrophages
mast cell/basophil activation
What are the members of the adaptive immune system?
B lymphocytes that become plasma cells (make antibodies) or memory B cells
T lymphocytes
- helper T cells (CD4)
- Cytotoxic T cells (CD8) that become effector T cells or memory T cells
neutrophils other name
polymorphs
WBC order of abundance
Never let me eat bananas
Neutrophils
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Eosinophils
Basophils
neutrophils
most abundant WBC
phagocytosis
neutrophilia (high) suggests acute bacterial infection
neutropenia often caused by drugs
eosinophils
