NEURO - alzheimer medications Flashcards
exemplar drug for cholinesterase inhibitors
DONEPEZIL
routes for DONEPEZIL
PO
uses of DONEPEZIL
improve cognitive function in MILD to MODERATE alzheimers & delay progression
pharmacologic action of DONEPEZIL
prevents acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine –> more acetylcholine for brain function –> slows progression, more function, NOT A FULL CURE
adverse reactions of DONEPEZIL
- nausea
- GI distress
- insomnia
- headache
- dizziness
- bradycardia
nursing interventions of DONEPEZIL
- observe for CV issues
- observe s/s of GI bleeding
- assist with ambulation
client education of DONEPEZIL
should NOT be take with food AT bedtime
- bc of insomnia
interactions with DONEPEZIL
- antihistamines decrease effect
- if used with NSAIDs –> increased risk of GI bleeding
exemplar drug for NMDA receptor antagonists
MEMANTINE
route for MEMANTINE
PO
uses for MEMANTINE
slows cognitive decline in MODERATE to SEVERE alzheimer’s
pharmacologic action of MEMANTINE
blocks glutamate from stimulating NMDA receptors –> reduces intracellular calcium –> restores transmission & prevents damage to neuron from calcium influx
- prevents calcium from breaking down more cells
- slows progression
- improves symptoms
adverse reactions of MEMANTINE
- dizziness
- headache
- confusion
- possible constipation
nursing interventions for MEMANTINE
monitor for CNS issues & constipation
client education of MEMANTINE
report side effects
