Neuro 4 - Brainstem and CNs Flashcards
What does the brain stem consist of?
midbrain, pons, medulla
2 parts of the midbrain?
dorsal - tectum
ventral - tegmentum
What does the dorsal midbrain contain?
tectum - made up of superior and inferior colliculi
What are the superior and inferior colliculi responsible for?
S; visual reflexes
I; auditory reflexes (looking towards a loud noise )
What does the ventral tegmentum contain?
- red nucleus
- substantia nigra
- reticular formation
Where are the crus cerebri and mammillary bodies found?
ventral midbrain
What do the cerebellar peduncles do? How many are there?
there are 3 - they connect the cerebellum to the brainstem
What are the superior and inferior brachii?
fibres that extend from their respective colliculi to the geniculate bodies in the thalamus
- S: lateral geniculate bodies
- I: medial geniculate bodies
What separates the pons from the medulla?
bulbopontine sulcus
What runs down the middle of the pons?
basilar sulcus - basilar artery runs here
What are the pyramids?
white matter structures containing motor fibres of the pyramidal tracts
The floor of the 4th ventricle is formed by the…
dorsal/posterior pons
The roof of the 4th ventricle is formed by the…
cerebellum
What is the medulla a continuation of?
spinal cord
What do the olives contain?
inferior olivary nucleus - motor learning
superior olivary nucleus - perception of sound
The posterior median sulcus marks the..
midline of the medulla
What lies either side of the posterior median sulcus?
gracile tubercle
Where is the cuneate tubercle?
in the medulla, lateral to the gracile tubercle
Mnemonic for the nerve types of the cranial nerves?
Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter Most
What will a cavernous sinus lesion affect?
Occulomotor, trochlear, abducens nerve
What does the cavernous sinus contain?
internal carotids and 5 CN nuclei
CN III, IV, V1, V2, V6
Occulomotor lesion will lead to…
the eyes to look down and out
