neural tube defects Flashcards
what is it
Neural tube defects represent a group of congenital defects, caused by incomplete closure of the neural tube within 28 days of conception. The most common forms are anencephaly, spina bifida and encephalocele.
main RF
The main risk factors are maternal folate deficiency, maternal vitamin B12 deficiency, previous history of having an infant with a neural tube defect, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and use of antiepileptic drugs
prevention in pregnancy
Pregnant women or women who wish to become pregnant should be advised to take supplementation with folic acid before conception and until week 12 of pregnancy.
higher daily dose for prevention in pregnancy is recommended for who
A higher daily dose (see folic acid) is recommended for women at a high risk of conceiving a child with a neural tube defect, including women who have previously had an infant with a neural tube defect, who are receiving antiepileptic medication (see Epilepsy), or who have diabetes or sickle-cell disease.
