Networks & Security - Denial of Service Flashcards
1
Q
What is a denial of service attack? (2)
A
- An attack that consumes so many network resources that there is none left for legitimate users
- An attack on a specific network resource (eg. disabling a server)
2
Q
Name 3 methods used in a denial of service attack
A
- Resource starvation
- Bandwidth consumption
- Attacking the routers
3
Q
What is resource starvation?
A
Using up a network resource so that legitimate users can’t access it
4
Q
What is bandwidth consumption?
A
Flooding the network with useless traffic until it crashes or denies service to legitimate users
5
Q
What is attacking the routers?
A
Diverting routers from their normal functions by releasing malformed PING packets
6
Q
What is PING?
A
Packet Internet Gropers, which are used to test operating speeds of the network
7
Q
What are domain name server attacks?
A
• Filling the cache on Domain Name Servers with name lookup data about non-existent hosts, which causes legitimate users to be dropped
