Networking: Chapter 6 (Network Security) Flashcards
What is the purpose of network security?
To protect data on the network, the network itself and the users of the network
What are the main security measures? (3)
- User access rights
- Encryption
- Human Engineering
What are some user access rights? (2)
- Using file permissions so only some users can access certain files
- Using access rights to hardware so only some users can access certain storage devices
What are the 3 network security requirements?
- Confidentiality (Keeping data confidential for security)
- Integrity (Data has to be valid and up to date)
- Availability (Data has to be available to authorised users)
What is a Firewall?
A Firewall checks all packets of data coming in and going out of a network, and determines whether to allow the packets to go to their destination
What is Filtering Software?

What is a Walled Garden?
These provide a restricted view of the Internet, and the user can only access websites that have been specifically selected.
What are the 2 methods a Firewall uses to protect a LAN from outside attacks?
- Packet Filtering (Filters packets bases on the IP address or Domain name)
- Circuit Level Filtering (Sets up a secure connection between a network and a remote user)
