Net Movement B2 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water particles across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.
What is water concentration?
The amount of solutes like sugars or salts in water, e.g. more solutes = low water concentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules across a cell membrane from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration, and requiring energy from respiration.
What is an example of active transport?
Root hair cells in plants have a higher concentration of minerals in the cell than the soil so they must resort to active transport.
